with special guests from the U.S.A.

CHAZZ YOUNG & CYNTHIA MILLMAN

Dont miss and enjoy the SWINGOUT TOKYO 2016 with special guests from the U.S.A., Chazz Young and Cynthia Millman.  There will be a swing dance party with the best swingin band in Tokyo, Cazzs jazz dance workshops, talks with Cynthia and Chazz and dinners.

"This event in Tokyo will be sensational!

What a wonderful way to celebrate Lindy Hop with Chazz Young and Cynthia Millman, two of the most important Lindy Hoppers in the world.

They were both so close to Frankie and knew his stories, philosophy, and spirit better than anyone.

Anyone who is able to go to Tokyo should not miss this special event!"

Cazz Young

After seeing his father, Frankie Manning, perform with Whitey's Lindy Hoppers in 1943, twelve-year-old Chazz Young decided he too wanted to be a dancer. Mannings first son trained extensively at Harlem's famed Mary Bruce Studio, then performed jazz, tap, and Lindy hop routines while touring internationally with the Norma Miller Dancers from the late 1940s until the mid 1960s. At this point Chazz took a fulltime position as a Postal Police Officer for the U. S. Postal Service, but continued to perform professionally and teach tap dancing to children and adults. With the beginning of the swing dance revival in the mid 1980s, Young was recognized as an invaluable resource by a new generation of dancers wishing to learn African American vernacular dance.  Today, this hugely talented performer, choreographer, and teacher is once again traversing the globe to share his deep knowledge of authentic jazz dance. Young played a member of the Hoofers Club in the film The Cotton Club, and Lindy hopped in Spike Lee's Malcolm X. In 1994, Chazz retired from the post office and moved to Las Vegas where he serves as Assistant Director of the Austin Dance Academy (relocated from NYC), for which he has taught tap and Lindy hop since 1966.

Cynthia Millman has studied, taught, and performed a wide variety of ballet, modern, and ethnic dance styles. She danced for five years with the Big Apple Lindy Hoppers under the artistic direction of legendary Lindy hopper Frankie Manning, partnering and teaching with this dance master. Frankie and Cynthia also presented numerous lecture/demonstrations on swing dance history at events in the U.S. and abroad, including for Jazz at Lincoln Center in NYC and the National Book Festival in Washington, DC.

Inspired by her love of the Lindy and by Frankies rich history, Cynthia began writing about vernacular dance, publishing articles in Dance Magazine, The International Encyclopedia of Dance (Oxford University Press), and swing dance publications. In collaboration with Frankie, Cynthia co-authored his memoir, Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop (Temple University Press, 2007), which has been translated into French, Japanese, and Italian.

Cynthia served on the Board of Directors of The New York Swing Dance Society, and is a founding board member of the Frankie Manning Foundation. She has been involved in many milestone birthday events in honor of Frankie, and curated an ambitious series of panel discussions on a wide variety of related topics for Frankie 100. She has consulted on numerous dance-related documentaries, radio and television interviews, books, and articles, and lectures internationally on swing dance history and Frankie Mannings life and legacy.

Cynthia holds masters degrees in dance/dance education, as well as in library science. She lives in New York City and has been Library Director at The Town School since 1995.

From Frankie to Cynthia:

シンシアへ

私の人生について、長い年月の間、惜しみない労力を注ぎ込んで書き上げてくれてどうもありがとう。もしあなたがこの本を書くことを先に知っていたならば、もっともっと良い人生を送ろうとしていたことでしょう。あなたの仕事は本当に素晴らしいです。もう一冊、お願いできますか?!

日本語版 Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop に寄せたシンシアの序文の原文

In the jazz tradition of affectionately honorary titles, Ambassador of Lindy Hop is exactly the right nickname for Frankie Manning. This extraordinary gentleman spent most of his long life traversing the globe to share the dance he loved so much, an art form he helped create, develop, and disseminate from the late 1920s until his passing on April 27th, 2009.  From the heavens, where Im sure he is Lindy hopping on the clouds to an orchestra composed of jazz royalty, Frankie continues to spread the gospel of swing.

Frankie was first in Asia in 1945 at the end of World War II. Although he was serving in the U.S. Army, he managed to dance a bit during the war, including in some USO shows in Japan. You can learn all about it in this book.

Frankie wanted nothing more than to see the whole world Lindy hopping. He was always delighted whenever he was asked to teach, perform, or choreograph in a new country, and he so appreciated the love and admiration accorded him by those discovering the joys of swing dance and music. It meant so much to him to be invited back to Japan as a professional dancer and teacher once the swing dance revival got underway. The first time was in 1998 for the Tokyo Swing Dance Society at the invitation of Hiro Yamada and his collaborators, famed jazz critic Masahisa Segawa and Toshio Watari, the owner of several ballroom dance studios. Frankie taught with Singaporean swing dancer Sing Lim, who herself has done so much to promote Lindy in her country. Happily, Hiro and TSDS built on the foundation of Frankies visits by importing Brits Ryan Francois, whom Frankie considered his artistic son, and his wife Jenny Thomas to share their broad knowledge of Lindy and jazz dance in 2002 and 2011.

Frankie and I spent over a decade getting his memoir onto the pages of a book, and I know that he would be absolutely thrilled at the idea of a Japanese translation. On behalf of Frankie, myself, and Lindy hoppers around the world, many thanks to swing dancer and jazz enthusiast Nammy Ogata for her dedication to bringing Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop to you.

As long as human beings dance to the music, I believe Frankie Manning will be affecting our lives for the better. Hiro tells me Frankies still adviser to the board of the Tokyo Swing Dance Society. I know my co-author joins me in hoping you are entertained and inspired by his life story. We thank you for taking time to read it.

Cynthia Millman,

Co-author with Frankie Manning of Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hop (Temple University Press, 2007)

書評

FRANKIE MANNING: AMBASSADOR OF LINDY HOP

Temple University Press (2007)

On behalf of all of the Hoofers, we thank you and salute you for every moment of truth, love and dedication translated to us all through your art form, your dance. Thank you Frankie Manning. I Love You!”―Savion Glover, tap dancer and Tony Award-winning choreographer

A poet of the dance floor. This book is a must read for anyone who loves the dance, amateur or professional. What a life he has lived, and thank God he remembers it all!!” Bette Midler, student and fan

Dance writer and swing dancer Millman conducted extensive interviews with Manning for a vivid account of his career. . . . the first-person accounts of Mannings life capture his vibrancy, humor and charm. . . this vivid memoir by one of swing dancings innovators and stars is a must for lovers of dance, jazz and African-American history.

Publishers Weekly

Dancer/librarian Millman calls Manning a prime innovator of the Lindy and captures the sensation of the lindy hop (a.k.a. the jitterbug). Mannings personality comes across via his vivid descriptions of dance contests, the excitement of choreographing, and the lindys decline and revival. He also discusses the racism he faced in the U.S. Army during World War II and while on tour. . . . This is an interesting and significant piece of the swing dance record valuable for its oral history.”―Library Journal

I loved this book! If you get me on the first few pages, which this book did, Im hooked. I loved hearing about all those great jazz musicians from a dancers point of view.

Wycliffe Gordon, jazz musician and composer

Still dancing at 93, Frankies account, sensitively co-written by Cynthia Millman, throws new light on broad swathes of original jazz dance practices. . . . his story significantly enlarges our understanding of 20th century popular dance.”―Dancing Times

And now we have Frankie Manningmaster of the oral, written, and dance forms of storytelling. . . . Sit down with the book and you will feel youve sat down with Frankie Manning in person to hear the wonderful story of his life. . . . Cynthia has included

information on the various dances mentioned . . . These asides from the main story are rich in detail.”―SwingDancer.com

-over-

A Swing Dancer enthusiast Cynthia R. Millman, who was inspired by the Lindy Hops unrecorded history, has provoked an apparently ageless Frankie Manning into revealing his first-hand knowledge of an African American dance phenomenon that was first popularized in 1920's Harlem dance halls. . . . And if that were not enough Ms. Millman created two books in one: Mannings autobiography and bulleted Dance History sections.”―JazzReview.com

Manning covers a jumpin and jivin career that wont quit. . . . Making guest appearances here are many great dancers and musicians from the Swing Era and beyond.”―The Seattle Times

Having heard Frankie talk at various dance camps, and having interviewed him once, I thought that there wasnt going to be much more to know when I started reading this. Boy was I wrong! I just couldnt put it down once I started reading, and finally finished at 4 a.m.”―Henry Hui Hui, Amazon.com customer review

What a wonderful story about such a wonderful individual! Im relatively new to Lindy hop, but its affected me in a big way and the more I learn the more addicted I become.

After reading Frankies autobiography, I realized that everyone who Lindy hops now is a part of that story, in some small way, and that makes me feel proud.”―Mary Weeks, Amazon.com customer review

Unlike most autobiographies, this book is concise and very well written. . . . Credit is given to all those involved, and many names and pictures are found throughout book. Whether you were there or not, this is a captivating travel back in time to relive a dazzling piece of American culture, the Lindy Hop and the man that helped shape it.

DasnOman, Amazon.com customer review

A one and a two, you know what to do! Get this book!! May yet Frankie and the Lindy Hoppers be recognized for what they were: the progenitors of popular mass youth culture. From Bandstand to the Lockers, to Soul Train, to breakdancing and all of Hip Hop movement, think of all the change and impact in the world that modern youth culture has brought . . . And, Frankie Manning was the creative genius who helped put in all in motion.”―Keep Dancing, Amazon.com customer review

Aside from having biblical stature in the Lindy Hop community, its extremely entertaining to the dancer and non-dancer alike. My only complaint is that it was so good I never wanted it to end!”―Daniel Conner, Amazon.com customer review

Frankie, you are an American treasure. Take your place among the worlds greatest, where youve always belonged!”―DanielinDenver, Amazon.com customer review

I couldnt stop smiling while reading it.”―M. Thompson, Amazon.com customer review
