Please keep re-visiting and re-loading.Frankie Manning, one of the founding fathers of Swing dancing and the greatest Lindy Hopper of all time. In the 1930s, Frankie was a leading dancer and choreographer for the famous Whitey's Lindy Hoppers. The troupe toured the United States, Europe and South America, spreading the excitement of this new American dance style, and introducing Swing dancing to the world. He is credited with performing the first aerials in Swing! In 1989 he won a Tony Award for his choreography in the Broadway hit Black and Blue. He came to Tokyo on March 1998 for the first Lindy Hop workshop in Japan. Before the workshop nobody in Japan knew what the Lindy Hop exactly was and most of all had never seen the dance. The Tokyo Swing Dance Society was established at that time. Frankie is now an advisor to the board of the Society. For more info about Frankie, visit WWW.SavoyStyle.Com. For his info in Japanese, visit here.
The Other Instructors -- Chazz Young (Las Vegas) --More information will be provided here. Please keep re-visiting and re-loading.This dance master will lead you through the paces of other American dance artforms too: rhythm tap and jazz. Chazz grew up in Harlem during the 30's and 40's, steeped in a culture of music and dance. The combination of Chazz's Las Vegas showmanship and razzle dazzle/ultra cool tap style are a pleasure to behold. He has worked with tap greats Sammy Davis Jr., the Nicholas Brothers, and Gregory Hines, and boasts dance appearances in the films Tap and Malcom X. Chazz will add jazz to your Lindy Hop. -- Mickey Davidson (NYC) --
Mickey has been affiliated with Lindy Hop since 1985 when she started rehearsing with Norma Miller and her Jazz Dancers. Since Norma's return to Las Vegas, Mickey does the group maintain Ms. Miller's choreography; they perform other diverse jazz style such as Tap and Modern Jazz in addition to floor and aerial Lindy Hop. Shows presently on tour are: "Swingin' Sisters", "Swingin' In Time","Great Dancing Ladies" and "Swingin' At the Savoy." Mickey teaches special Lindy Hop and Lindy related workshop internationally and also frequently partners and assists Frankie Manning. -- Jun Maruta (NYC) --
He has closely worked with Frankie Manning for over five years. He was a member of the Big Apple Lindy Hoppers of the New York Swing Dance Society, through which he performed Frankie's chreographies, sometimes with him. He is currently with the Mama Lu Parks Dancers, the oldest existing authentic jazz/Lindy Hop company. He has been trained by a number of Harvest Moon Ball Champions, carrying the Harlem tradition. In addition, his familiarity in other disciplines of dance such as tap, jazz, ballet, modern and Afro-Caribbean as well as his athletic background are all part of his lindy dancing. Frankie considers him to be an "up-and-coming" lindy hopper. -- Simone Coonrod (NYC) --
When she discovered the Lindy Hop, it turned out to be perfectly in line with her background as a professional musician and champion gymnast. Since then she has performed in and around New York and collaborated with Sonny Allen, the former Harvest Moon Ball Champion from the Savoy Ballroom. She is currently a member of the Big Apple Lindy Hoppers of the New York Swing Dance Society. She is also a certified dance and creative movement educator, and manages a busy schedule teaching and coaching dance, movement and music - when she is not performing. -- Ken Watanabe (San Francisco) --
(photo:A policeman watching Ken dancing) "Ken Watanabe has been dancing Lindy Hop since 1995, and he has studied from some of the best Lindy Hop dancers in the world. He has performed at Swing Camp Catalina, is a co-founder of San Francisco's Lindy in the Park, and is currently the Vice President of the Northern California Lindy Society. Ken has been teaching Lindy Hop classes regularly for the past 2 years." -- Azusa K. Yamada (Tokyo) --
(photo: Azusa and Chazz) Azusa was born in Hokkaido, Japan, moved to Tokyo and started dancing in 1986. Azusa and her partner Hiro have competed dancing as modern category dancers of the international style ballroom dancing at British Dance Championship, Japan Dance Championship, and other major dance championships. They started the Lindy Hop in December 1997 and invited Frankie Manning to Tokyo in March 1998 at the first Lindy Hop workshop in Japan. They have established the Tokyo Swing Dance Society, the first Lindy Hop society in Japan.
