Natsuko Furukawa 古川奈都子 (band leader, piano and vocals)

Natsuko Furukawa is one of the best jazz musicians in Tokyo as a pianist, vocalist and band leader regarding New Orleans jazz, swing jazz and blues. Her 5-piece band, Natsuko Furukawa and Her Soul Food Café, is well known in Japan as a very professional powerful New Orleans jazz band performing regularly at many jazz clubs, events and jazz festivals not only in Japan but also in the U.S. and Korea.   Tokyo Swing Dance Society features her 7-piece swing jazz unit, Natsuko Furukawa Swing Orchestra, for their big swing events every year.  She does also solo play, duo, trio and the other forms depending on the situation perfectly.

5歳よりピアノを始め、早稲田大学在学中よりトラディショナルジャズを軸にした音楽活動を展開。87年より毎年通っているニューオリンズでジャズエンターテイメントを磨き、ジャズスポットやジャズイベント、テレビ、ラジオで活躍中。超一流のヴォーカリスト、ピアニストであると同時にメンバーの能力を最大限引き出す優秀なバンドリーダー・音楽監督。

東京スウィング・ダンス・ソサエティとの関わりは1998年から続いており、2000年のFrankie Manning’s Millennium Birthday Bashでフランキー・マニングを前に演奏。毎年、ジャズの聖地、米国ニューオリンズ市を訪問し、現地のジャズミュージシャンとの演奏を通して本物のサウンドにさらなる磨きをかけている。カンサスシティーより名誉市民、音楽家協会名誉会員として表彰。海外では米国シカゴのスウィングダンスイベントで公演。また最近は韓国のダンスイベントに呼ばれ、ソウルや済州島スイングフェスティバルで大勢のダンサーを楽しませている。天王洲キャナルジャズフェスティバル2018で音楽監督を勤めた。日本最大のトラッドジャズの祭典、新宿トラッドジャズフェスティバル（年２回開催）では、古川奈都子Soul Food Cafe のユニットとして演奏し、他を圧倒する実力と存在感を示している。

2017年に再来日した世界のトップインストラクターのFabien&Lisaも、「自分たちは毎週末のように世界のスウィングダンスイベントでジャズバンドを聴いて躍っているが、奈津子のオーケストラは間違いなくベストで、どの曲の演奏でも踊り出したくなった。普通はなかなかそうはならない。」とのフィードバックを残した。

The following is a comment about Natsuko’s orchestra from Mr.Chazz Young when he joined SWINGOUT TOKYO 2016.

I enjoyed Netsuko’s band very, very, very much. The songs were up-to-date, and most enjoyable. The musicians were right in there with our best musicians, and they put out a really great beat. It was so wonderful dancing to their music.

“Drop Me off in Harlem” was reminiscent of the old days, where Ella used to sing it. I liked this version!  Of course, “Take the A Train” reminded me of back in the day, all the bands used to play that. And “Corner Pocket!” These are among my favorite songs.

世界１のリンディホッパー、Ryan & Jennyの2011年来日ダンスイベントR&J Swing Ichiban Ballでは、彼らをして「これほど優れたジャズミュージシャンは世界にそういるものではない。ぜひ英国に連れて帰りたい。」といわしめた。

フランキー・マニング生誕99周年記念イベントCelebrating Frankie 2013において、シンシア・ミルマン（Cynthia Millman, Frankie Manning: Ambassador of Lindy Hopの共著者、Frankie Manning 100 in NY 主催者の一人）曰く、「奈都子のバンドは、これまでの私のダンス人生において、間違いなく最も楽しく秀でたバンドの一つ。この日演奏された全ての曲で私は踊りたくなった。米国にも素晴らしいバンドがたくさんあるが、こんな経験をしたことは無い。きっと世界中のスウィングダンサーもこのバンドで踊りたくなると思う。」
