Kogen-ji Temple Jazz Event for Swing Dancers:
Written by Hiro, TSDS

Calling all swing dancers! Join us for a free outdoor jazz event in the serene garden of Kogen-ji Temple, located in Bunkyo-ku, Tokyo. [Find it on Google Maps]. Held every autumn, this annual jazz event is a must-visit for dancers, blending lively jazz with the tranquil ambiance of a traditional Japanese Buddhist temple. Don’t miss this unique celebration! Set in the open precincts of Kogen-ji Temple, the event features a variety of jazz bands. While some performances may not suit swing dancing, select bands will deliver dance-friendly sets perfect for hitting the dance ground! Enjoy food and craft beer stalls while soaking in the vibrant atmosphere. Each jazz band below performs a single, high-energy set, so be sure to arrive on time. Event details, including the schedule with danceable performances highlighted, will be posted here approximately one week prior.

Saturday, November 8th

On the first day, Saturday, the Tokyo Django Collective will perform. I haven’t heard them yet, but judging by their name, I imagine they’re a group playing in the Django Reinhardt style with two guitars and a double bass. Their performance might have a slightly upbeat tempo.

Sunday, November 9th

On the final day, Sunday, the Hirofumi Asaba Trio, led by Hirofumi, who has performed at TSDS events multiple times, is an outstanding swing band. Last year, many dancers were able to dance to their music at this event. It will undoubtedly be a highlight of the event. In addition to Hirofumi Asaba on guitar, Nobuyuki Yano plays double bass, and Rena Toshimitsu handles a snare drum and vocals.
